How an Aromatic Diffuser Works: A Guide to the Formats and the Physics
There are several main technologies for scenting the air, and each works in its own way. Let's go through them, from the simplest and most natural to the most technically advanced.
Reed Diffusers
This is the most popular and arguably the most elegant way to fill a home with fragrance. A reed diffuser needs no electricity, no heat, and no open flame; it works on the natural laws of physics.
How It Works
The system has three key elements: a glass or ceramic bottle, a fragrance liquid, and purpose-made reeds.
The secret is capillary action. Each reed is threaded with countless microscopic channels, and the fragrance liquid rises through them like sap through a stem. When it reaches the top of the reed, the liquid evaporates at room temperature, filling the air with a pure, understated scent.
The Key Components
- The liquid: professional home fragrances are not made from essential oils but from perfumery compositions. They are what creates the complex, many-sided pyramid that unfolds gradually and stays in the air for a long time, far removed from anything that smells “medicinal”;
- The reeds: the material has a direct effect on how the diffuser performs. The most efficient option is rattan reeds: natural, porous, and excellent at drawing liquid up thanks to their structure. For oil bases, fiber reeds made of compressed cotton are ideal. Note: BAGO home diffusers work only with the brand's own fiber reeds, which give the optimal rate of evaporation and fragrance release.
Advantages and Controlling the Intensity
- Complete safety: with no flame, no heat, and no electricity, a diffuser can be left in any room, including a child's;
- Long-lasting effect: a single 100 ml bottle will keep giving fragrance for anywhere from one to several months;
- Adjustability: by adding or removing reeds you control the strength of the scent easily. For a light trail 1–2 reeds are enough; for an intense fragrance, use 5–7.

Ultrasonic Diffusers
These are active electrical devices rather than passive ones, and they do two things at once: distribute fragrance and humidify the air.
They work through the high-frequency vibration of a piezoelectric element (a membrane) at 1.7 to 2.5 MHz. The membrane breaks a mixture of water and essential oil into microscopic particles, turning it into a cool mist. A built-in fan then pushes that scented mist out into the room.
Ultrasonic diffusers make full aromatherapy possible. They only work, however, with purpose-made water-soluble fragrance concentrates or essential oils, and they need regular cleaning.
Fan Diffusers
This device works much like a hairdryer. Inside is a fan that drives air through a cartridge or filter soaked in essential oil. The airflow picks up the oil molecules and disperses them through the room.
It is an excellent choice for offices and larger spaces that need a constant, even background scent. Its key advantage is that it can run on pure essential oils, with no water added.
Nebulizing Diffusers
Nebulizers are often called “cold” diffusers, and they are the most powerful, professional-grade devices available. They use compressed air to break concentrated essential oil into ultra-fine, dry microparticles (nanoparticles) that can stay suspended in the air for hours.
The technology delivers the most concentrated, intense fragrance possible, with no water and no heat. Atomizing with compressed air is the cleanest and most natural way to disperse a scent, ideal for spas and large spaces.
Evaporative and Heat Diffusers
- Natural evaporation: the simplest method of all — place a few drops of oil on a piece of untreated wood, a clay disc, or paper. The oil molecules evaporate at room temperature, creating a local, very light scent;
- With heat: electric oil warmers, ceramic rings for incandescent bulbs, or classic oil burners heated by a candle. Heat speeds up evaporation and makes the fragrance more intense, but it can partly destroy the beneficial properties of essential oils.

Which Diffuser Should You Choose for Your Home?
The right choice depends on what you need and on the layout of the space:
- For a bedroom or a smaller living room, a reed diffuser is ideal. It creates a soft, relaxing background and works quietly and safely. A volume of 50–100 ml is the sweet spot for most living spaces;
- In a child's room or a bathroom, a reed diffuser or a nebulizer is the better option. Neither gets hot, and both are safe around children.
- For the kitchen and entryway, use a spray or a fan diffuser. A fan will deal with strong odors quickly and create an energizing atmosphere;
- For an office or a studio, larger ultrasonic diffusers or nebulizers are the better fit, since they can cover up to 100 sq. m.
